The President of the Republic returned this Monday to downplay the decision announced by PS to confirm the housing decree, which he vetoed, believing it was democracy in action.
“Parliament remains on its own and votes accordingly and confirms its vote, and I remain with my own, in the sense that he did not convince me,” Marcelo Rebelo de Souza told RTP and Antena1 during a meeting with the Portuguese community in Poland. , in Warsaw, as part of the program of his official visit to this country.
The head of state predicted that in a few years it will be seen who was right and whether the housing package, approved by the Assembly of the Republic only by the votes of the PS, will solve the problems of the industry.
“After two and a half, three years, we are alive, and you can check whether it mobilized and whether it solved existing problems or failed,” he said.
Asked if he thought time would prove him right, Marcelo replied: “I wish it wasn’t, but as I see it, yes, otherwise I wouldn’t veto, nobody likes to veto.”
The President of the Republic even justified that out of 1,700 diplomas he had vetoed only 33 so far, but insisted that in the case of housing, “what is prescribed by law is not what the law proposes as conditions for obtaining”, i.e. e. , to solve problems.
Marcelo said that he did not speak with the prime minister, but only with the chairman of the Assembly of the Republic, noting that in the event of this veto, it is about the relationship of the president with parliament, and not with the government.
Regarding the publication of the diploma governing the career of teachers, the head of state justified this by an amendment made by the executive branch on his proposal, but acknowledged that teachers feel that there is still a need and space for dialogue and negotiations, given that they must continue to do so now and not just after the next election.
Regarding the visit to Poland, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he was very pleased to meet the Portuguese community that flocked to the Warsaw library, primarily to see that there are young Portuguese who have recently arrived “to carry out the most impressive tasks.” in large companies, banking, distribution, public works, energy, digital technologies, etc.”
“There are tangible results in economic growth in recent years, and they will continue in the future,” the President warned.
This afternoon, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was awarded the Warsaw University medal in recognition of “for everything he has done for Europe, for humanity” and for this educational institution.
The President of the Republic on Monday vetoed a decree consolidating major amendments to housing legislation – with changes to the terms of rent, licensing or local accommodation – approved on July 19 in Parliament by the PS, which has already said it will confirm it at the beginning of the next legislative session.
In a message accompanying the return of the diploma to Parliament, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza expressed a “calm negative judgment” about the measures and criticized the lack of party consensus.
