This Monday, the PSD President defended that the government should abandon the More Housing program and start from scratch to develop a housing program for Portugal with the participation of his party.
According to Luis Montenegro, the government made a mistake and “either does what is required of those who want to govern for the benefit of the people, [que é] from scratch, literally tearing apart what he has done so far and starting from scratch the housing program for Portugal” for the next 20 years, or “commits a crime”.
“The government made a mistake. Dr. António Costa should show humility and tell the country: “I made a mistake, I apologize. I’m here to start from scratch.” leader of the opposition, I also have the humility to side with the government in favor of the Portuguese,” the PSD leader told reporters, in the first reaction after Parliament vetoed a diploma containing basic measures on housing issues. Republic President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
For Luis Montenegro, faced with a veto, the PS “either retain its stubbornness and confirm in parliament the purpose of these diplomas and perhaps give the country, as the President of the Republic says, something that will not be realized and that the goals will never be achieved” or “to do what is required of anyone who wants to rule for the benefit of the people (that is, start from scratch”).
“Literally tearing apart what has been done so far and restarting the housing program from the ground up to increase access to housing for young people, less resourced couples and even the middle class. And in this you can count on PSD,” he said.
The SDP leader recalled that the party had presented a plan: “We are not the bearers of the whole truth. Perhaps our plan is not perfect, but everyone recognized that it is consistent, consistent, capable. is on the side of the SDP in the service of Portugal.”
Luis Montenegro said that if Prime Minister António Costa wants to “start from scratch tomorrow with a housing plan for Portugal for the next 20 years, PSD has a team ready to help the government.”
“If you insist” with this diploma, the leader of the Social Democrats believes that the government is committing a “political crime” for which “the Portuguese will pay in the coming years.”
The SDP president has no doubts about what he will take away from the legislative proposal, which is now vetoed: “Starting with adventures such as forced leases. What is being done in local housing, that the rules are about to change and that their investments do not have the strength to see the light of day,” says Luis Montenegro.
Montenegro needs to have “serious public investment, it does not use, as the government does, only PPR, the money that is at hand to compensate for the lack of investment in recent years for housing construction” .
Montenegro also expressed its regret to journalists that in the first presentation of the “More Housing” program “even the municipalities, which are its main executors, were not heard.”
The President of the Republic vetoed a package of legislative amendments in the field of housing, approved by an absolute majority of the PS in Parliament, expressing a “calm negative judgment” on them, and criticized the lack of consensus.
“I know, and we all know, that the parliamentary absolute majority can, in a few weeks, repeat the just voted approval. serene judgment, analytical negatives,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in a message addressed to the President of the Assembly of the Republic, available on the website of the Presidium.
