The Inspector General for Health Activities (IGAS) has decided, together with the Health Regulatory Authority (ERS), to investigate the death of an elderly person in the corridor of the Beatriz Angelo Hospital in Loures, the institution said on Tuesday.

“Given that IGAS has decided to initiate a clarification process to assess the need to develop a different type of inspection action, and that the health regulatory authority, within its powers, is also investigating the situation through an assessment process, the two authorities have decided to work together to obtain all necessary clarifications in a complementary manner,” IGAS said in a statement.

In a released note, the Inspectorate General acknowledged that it learned of the case from the media and noted the announcement by the board of directors of the hospital department of “an investigation process of an urgent nature.”

“While the preliminary assessment did not establish any relationship between the length of stay in the emergency room, the care provided and the outcome submitted for review, the board of directors determined that the investigation process should be opened as a matter of urgency to fully investigate the facts,” the hospital said in a statement this morning.
