SDP President Luis Montenegro said this Sunday that he completely disagrees with the position of former Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho regarding the decriminalization of euthanasia and believes that the position of the former social democratic leader is “very closed”.
“I do not agree with Dr. Pedro Passos Coelho. I am very direct. I completely disagree with the position of Dr. Pedro Passos Coelho. [sobre a eutanásia]🇧🇷 I do not agree that he does not agree with holding a referendum on this issue. I disagree because his position is very closed. Although I am inclined to be against it, I do not have such a closed position as he has,” Luis Montenegro told reporters in Vila de Rei, where he opened the new SDP headquarters.
This Sunday, the PSD leader launched a new week of the Sentir Portugal program, in which he will spend one week a month in each of the regions of the country for the next two years.
In an article in the online newspaper Observador published last Thursday, the former Social Democrat Prime Minister (2011-2015) called on parties opposed to the decriminalization of euthanasia to transparently commit themselves to repeal the law in the future if they have a majority in Parliament .
“More than waiting for the decision of the Constitutional Court” if the President of the Republic raises this issue, Passos Coelho wants the parties that “oppose this “revolution” of the organization of euthanasia to transparently commit themselves to fight for its abolition” if they manage to win majority of deputies in the future.
