Dozens arrested in Greece on suspicion of arson

Greek police have arrested 79 people on suspicion of starting most of the fires ravaging the country, which have already killed 21 people this week alone. One such fire in northeast Greece is considered the largest ever recorded in the EU.

Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilas reported several attempts to set new fires on Mount Parnitha, northwest of Athens, and warned “the scum of the arsonists” that “they won’t run away, we’ll catch you and bring you to justice.”

Eighteen corpses were found on Tuesday in a farm shed near Alexandropolis, and another victim was discovered the day before in the woods. On the same day, another body was found in the center of the country. He will die trying to save the herd. This Friday, at the same spot as 18 corpses on Tuesday, another victim was found, believed to be migrants who had arrived in Greece from Turkey, as a fire raged in an area near the Turkish border.
