Nine people, five of them children, were found dead on the morning of Monday, August 28, inside two houses on the same street in the city of Mata de São João, in the Salvador metropolitan area, the capital of the Brazilian state. from Bahia. All bodies are charred.
At 9:45 am local time and 1:45 pm in Lisbon, the Bahian police have yet to give an official cause of death, but it appears to have been a massacre by organized crime. The bodies of two adult women were found in one of the houses, and the bodies of two adults and five children were found in a neighboring house.
The 12-year-old girl was found still alive, but in serious condition with burns over 55% of her body, and firefighters took her to El Salvador General Hospital, 62 km away. Until that time, the agents, who arrived shortly before the scene, did not provide other details, namely, whether there were marks of gunshots, stab wounds or other injuries on the bodies.
The two houses where the bodies were found are in Loteamento Colonia, a poor neighborhood on the outskirts of Mata de São João.
The state of Bahia leads Brazil in terms of violence, with a frightening wave of deliberate deaths among members of rival gangs contesting drug trafficking, and an equally brutal response from security forces that have made the Bahian police force the deadliest in the country.
