A “technical glitch” has affected the air traffic control network in the UK, leading to significant flight delays, including those from Faro.
The UK’s National Air Traffic Service (NATS) said on Monday it had been forced to restrict flights in UK airspace. “We are currently experiencing a technical issue and have imposed air traffic restrictions to ensure safety. Engineers are working to find and resolve the issue,” a spokesman for the organization said, quoted by Reuters.
NATS did not provide an estimate of how long these restrictions would last, nor did it provide a reason for the technical issue.
European air traffic control authority Eurocontrol has already warned of “very high” delays due to the failure.
Early in the morning, several planes waited for more than an hour to land. British airspace is not closed, but there are strict restrictions.
A source from ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal admitted to CNN that UK airspace restrictions could have “some impact” on flights to and from the UK at all national airports, and there could also be delays or cancellations. ANA advises passengers departing from or arriving at airports in Portugal to contact the airlines for more information on the status of flights scheduled for this Monday.
