‘Bigger and brighter’: Blue supermoon to be seen tonight

On Wednesday evening, another supermoon will light up the sky. This time it’s a blue supermoon, so named because it’s the second full moon in the same month (the first was August 1st).

According to NASA, each month the Moon passes through the point farthest from the Earth (apogee) and the point closest to the Earth (perigee). The moon is called a supermoon when it is at its closest point to the earth and at the same time it is full. During this phenomenon, the moon “seems bigger and brighter in the sky” and even looks about 14% more than when it is farthest from Earth.

On Wednesday evening, the Moon will be 357,344 kilometers from Earth, about 50,000 kilometers closer to Earth than usual.

A full moon is usually a once-a-month phenomenon, resulting in 12 full moons a year. But since it takes 29.5 days to complete one phase of the moon, it takes only 354 days to complete 12 cycles. Since the sum of 365/366 days in a year is not exact, we have the 13th full moon approximately every two and a half years.

According to the US space agency, in 2037 we will see only two supermoons in one month.
