More than a thousand doctors have signed a letter sent this Friday to the Minister of Health warning of the impossibility of working more than the mandatory 150 hours a year unless deadlocked negotiations with the class are overcome.
Speaking to the Lusa agency, Helena Terleira explained this Friday that the document was sent to the email address of Minister Manuel Pizarro’s office.
It was signed by “a total of 1,045 doctors from across the country, 187 of whom work in the local Alto Miño Medical Unit (ULSAM)”, he said.
The government has rescheduled to Thursday a round of talks with medical unions for a final graduation on the generalization of Model B family health care facilities and full commitment to the cause, the Health Ministry told Luce.
The meeting with the medical unions was set for September 11th and rescheduled for the 7th to speed up negotiations, close this “dossier” and publish diplomas, and doctors could start getting more. in a family health unit (USF) or adhere to a new regimen of total dedication.
In a statement to Lusa, representatives from the Independent Union of Physicians (SIM) and the National Federation of Physicians (FNAM) said they had already been notified of the upcoming meeting, but expectations for an agreement were very low.
The collection of signatures for an open letter sent today to Manuel Pizarro was initiated by ULSAM doctors on August 19 expressing “the impossibility of working more than 150 hours of overtime unless the scheduled meeting between the Ministry of Health and the medical unions is held.” offerings that value medical careers and therefore the National Health Service (SNS).”
“We are aware of the consequences of this form of struggle and the serious restrictions on the work of hospitals, in particular the ambulance service. We are also responsible and very resilient doctors. We will only use this form of struggle if we are forced to the Minister of Health, who is also a doctor, to write the rest of the story,” said a doctor at the Santa Luzia Hospital in Viana do Castelo.
Helena Terleira reported that “ULSAM doctors have already submitted lists of emergency services for September without overtime, where there are shifts without internal medicine and general surgery coverage.”
“We ask colleagues who have joined or will join this measure to inform the directors of the relevant services and these boards of directors so that they are aware and can act accordingly,” said the doctor of the internal medicine service of the Santa Luzia Hospital.
Helena Terleira expressed her regret “that at a time when there is talk of a massive restructuring of SNS, the human resources on which SNS depends are so underestimated.”
“Without a medical career that is fairly paid and valued, there will be no reform that will save the SNS,” he stressed.
Physicians are “demanding an overhaul of the pay scale, a decent base salary for all and better working conditions, and they don’t want more overtime.”
In August, as signatures were being collected from the doctors contacted by Lusa, a source in the Ministry of Health stated that “as the negotiation process is ongoing, a public statement would not be timely” about the letter.
“The Ministry of Health is deeply committed to the negotiation process with the medical unions. The Ministry of Health takes note of the above letter, but since the negotiation process is already underway, a public statement on this matter would be impromptu,” he replied to Luce. .
