Social Democratic and Christian Democratic MPs in the Azores parliament this Wednesday criticized the approval in the Assembly of the Republic of a decree decriminalizing violent death, saying the archipelago’s regional assembly was not heard in the process. .
When asked about this position by Azores MPs, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa replied that the decision from this legislature has not yet been received: “I have not yet received a decision from the Assembly of the Azores until I received it from Madeira. I have seen the news in the papers, but I will have to wait.”
The head of state said he thought the diploma would only arrive in Belém “after Christmas” because “the final version has been postponed until next week.”
The approval of the decriminalization of violent death under certain conditions was made on Wednesday at the plenary session of the Regional Legislative Assembly by CDS deputy Rui Martins, who considered it “absolute disrespect” for the regional autonomy that the Azore parliament was not consulted on this issue.
Speaking on Rádio Renascença on Monday, Luis Garcia acknowledged that the Constitution does not require regional parliaments to hear on the euthanasia law, but expressed regret that the Azores Legislative Assembly was not heard.
“Although the Constitution does not specify the issues on which the autonomous regions are required to hear, referring only to issues relating to the regions, we understand that, given the sensitivity of the issue and since it is a matter of health “I believe that the assembly should have been heard, we regret this non-listening and even consider it disrespectful to the legislature,” he said.
On December 9, the Assembly of the Republic approved the decriminalization of medically assisted death in a final global vote for the third time with a majority of PS, IL, BE and individual MPs from PAN and Livre, as well as six MPs from the PSD.
They voted against the Chega and PKP parliamentary groups.
A total of 210 deputies attended the plenary session.
The decree has yet to be assessed by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who can promulgate it, veto it or apply to the Constitutional Court for a preventive review of the text.
