IL says presidential election debate ‘completely impromptu’

The leader of the Liberal Initiative, Rui Rocha, called the debate over the 2026 presidential election this Sunday “completely impromptu,” saying it would only be understandable if the country hadn’t faced other challenges.

“Honestly, I can’t even understand this zeal for the presidential elections that is now in Portugal, because it would be understandable if we had no problems,” Rui Rocha said on the sidelines of a meeting with militants in Portugal. Povoa de Varzim, in the Porto area.

Speaking to reporters, Rui Rocha said the 2026 presidential election should not be at the center of political debate, saying the debate around the issue is “completely impromptu.”

“Political parties don’t want to talk about health? Don’t they want to talk about housing? Don’t they want to talk about taxes?” he asked, saying the presidential election is not a Liberal Initiative race.

“We are in a race for the specific concerns of the Portuguese,” he said.

And he added: “Those who have no solutions, those who have nothing to offer the country, perhaps they are interested in holding a presidential race, which, let’s take this into account, will take place in almost two and a half years.”
