The leader of the Liberal Initiative, Rui Rocha, admitted this Sunday that he was tired of seeing the country “always with an outstretched hand to Brussels” and defended the need to resolve internal problems and restore the confidence of the Portuguese, especially in terms of the Corps.
“I don’t want a country that always extends its hand to Brussels, I want a country that can solve its problems and be able to restore confidence in the Portuguese,” Rui Rocha said, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting with militants in Povoa Varzima, Porto district.
Asked if, like the President of the Republic, he expects the European Commission to pay attention to the Prime Minister’s letter on housing problems, the leader of the Liberal Initiative admitted that he was “a little tired” from meeting with the “Prime Minister”, António Costa, always with an outstretched hand.”
“I confess that I am already a little tired of this image of Portugal and, above all, Prime Minister António Costa, always with his hand outstretched, unable to solve the problems of the country, unable to find solutions to the problems of the country and then, resorting to the help of Brussels, as if Brussels is responsible for deciding what we really have to decide domestically,” he said.
Rui Rocha, who already believed that the letter sent to the European Commission represented an acknowledgment of the “huge failure” of the Mais Habitação package, stated that the program is “a good example of the political problems that António Costa creates for the country”. .
“We all know the promises that [o primeiro-ministro] he did this for eight years of rule over Portugal. Promises are always not kept in terms of housing,” he said, listing the lack of places in university residences and decent housing for those most in need.
“We see that in a country where at that time it was necessary to build 100,000 houses a year, we have 30,000 houses, because the António Costa government has deprived the market of all confidence,” he added, amplifying the criticism already leveled at more housing package.
On Friday, the housing minister said a letter the government has sent to the European Commission indicates that housing is a priority that is “across Europe” on a list meant to identify “big common problems”.
Speaking to reporters in Entroncamento, the Minister explained that “the letter sent by the Prime Minister [para a Comissão Europeia] sent every year [desde 2022] set priorities at the European level”.
The government has sent its 2024 priorities to the European Commission in the form of a set of 15 proposals, which include the European Affordable Housing Initiative or “water resilience and water availability framework”.
