The President of the Republic this Sunday suggested that the housing issue is a “race against the clock”, noting that once the “More Housing” package is approved by the Assembly of the Republic, a regulatory phase will follow.
“Housing is a race against time,” Marcelo Rebelo de Souza told TVI at the Belém National Palace, where the Book Festival ends this Sunday.
And he added: “There is a law, this law, after 15 days we recognize that it has been approved by the parliament, but then there is a decree-law that allows us to streamline the administrative measures that need to be regulated.”
Assessing that this can be done in one or two months, the head of state stressed that after that “it is necessary to organize the construction of what depends on society, it is necessary to give incentives to private individuals and it is necessary to put what is cooperative.”
The President of the Republic vetoed a decree consolidating the major amendments to housing legislation – with changes in the conditions of rent, licensing or local residence – approved on July 19 in the Parliament of the PS, which has already said it will approve it at the beginning of the next legislative session.
“My position is that I thought it was short and insufficient, but if they show me that it is long and more than sufficient, I will be glad,” he said.
The government has sent its 2024 priorities to the European Commission in the form of a set of 15 proposals, which include the European Affordable Housing Initiative or “Water Sustainability and Water Accessibility Framework”.
