September marks the start of a new season of extratropical storm names in Europe. So says the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), which has already prepared a list of names.
Here are the names that can be assigned to the following storms: Alina, Bernard, Celine, Domingos, Elisa, Frederico, Geraldine, Hipólito, Irene, Juan, Carlotta, Louis, Monica, Nelson, Olivia, Pierrick, Renata, Sancho, Tatiana. , Vasco and Wilhelmina.
According to the IPMA, “The name is given to all extratropical depressions that trigger an orange or red level wind warning in the international weather warning system or affect an area of special observational concern.” The first country to issue this warning is the one that names the depression or storm and informs other countries about it, which should keep the name.
According to IPMA, the naming is a joint project of the European meteorological services under the auspices of EUMETNET and aims to draw public attention to the prevention and protection of life and property at risk. IPMA belongs to the South Western group (SW), which includes the meteorological services of Spain (AEMET), France (Météo-France), Belgium (RMI) and Luxembourg (MeteoLux).
