BE is demanding urgent clarification on the dismissal of six obstetricians from Santa Maria Hospital and, to that end, asked for parliamentary hearings on Tuesday for these doctors, the Minister of Health and the board of directors of the hospital department.
Six obstetricians and gynecologists at Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon have resigned, including the former director of obstetrics, Luisa Pinto, who speaks in insecurity and accuses the administration of contempt.
According to the BE request, in which an urgent parliamentary health committee hearing is being held, “the situation in the obstetric service of the Santa Maria Hospital (CHULN) has been deteriorating for several weeks.”
“This was facilitated by the announcement of the closure of the maternity hospital that was not brought to the attention and coordination with the collectives, the dismissal of specialists by the board of directors due to disagreements, and false accusations of low “productivity” against the collectives. that so often they worked overtime for 500 or 600 hours to ensure the full functioning of the services, the forced transfer of these specialists to another hospital or worsening conditions of care,” the blockers are quoted as saying.
BE also recalled that, given this situation, BE “demanded to listen to the subjects, questioned the ministry, called on the PS and the government to show common sense and abandon the path of destruction they were betting on.”
“All in vain. Apparently, arbitrary dismissals, the destruction of the team, the closure of the maternity ward, the deterioration in the quality of medical care, ridicule of medical workers, all this was not accidental. It was intentional. The plan should be implemented with government support at the same time that the SNS was open to private maternity hospitals and more and more births were being delivered there,” the party accused in a statement signed by MP Katarina Martins.
For BE, “with the departure of these specialists, the field of obstetrics, already critical, becomes even poorer” and “the scale that has already been made at the cost of hundreds and hundreds of overtime hours will become even more difficult.”
The news was reported by the weekly newspaper Expresso and confirmed by Luce Luisa Pinto, who resigned on Tuesday morning following an accumulation of situations that she believes jeopardize the security conditions of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Transportation Service.
“What held me back no longer exists. Our hospital doesn’t seem to want us here,” said Luisa Pinta, adding that despite concerns about the National Health Service (SNS), “if they don’t want us, it’s better for us to leave with dignity.”
As he explained to Luse, his decision and the decision of five other colleagues is related to the plan of the Executive Directorate of the SNA for the response of obstetrics and gynecology, which stipulated that, although the maternity ward of the Santa Maria hospital was closed, as regards work, between August and March next years – services were concentrated in the hospital of St. Francisco Xavier.
