The Independent Physicians Union continues strikes over lack of agreement with government

The Independent Physicians Union (SIM) continues its strikes planned for this month due to the lack of an agreement with the government for higher wages and full commitment, the secretary general said this Thursday after a negotiating meeting.

Jorge Roque da Cunha noted that despite the fact that the government has revised from 1.6% to 3.1% a proposal to increase the average salary of professional doctors, this measure remains insufficient in the face of “a loss in purchasing power of 22%”.

With regard to the new regime of total commitment, SIM believes that despite the government’s proposal to reduce the number of overtime hours from 300 to 250 per year, the number of hours required is still “excessive” due to the “workload” that hospital doctors already carry. .

The next negotiating meeting between the trade unions and the Ministry of Health, on which SIM does not plan to reach an agreement, is scheduled for Tuesday.

Negotiations between doctors’ unions and the government have been ongoing since 2022.

SIM has foreseen strikes in the regions of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, as well as in the north, until the end of September. Until September 22, the suspension of work of family doctors at overtime continues.

This Thursday was the last and second day of the first strike in the northern region.

Next Wednesday and Thursday, SIM will hold the first of two strikes in Lisbon and the Tagus Valley region.
