The President of the Socialist Party, Carlos César, this Sunday considered that it would be “useful” for PSD leader Luis Montenegro to “sell the idea of the country as if it were a black heap of problems.” accusing him of inconsistency.
In his final speech at the Socialist Academy in Évora, Carlos César began by lamenting that the PSD would never recognize “what went well” in socialist governance.
“Sometimes they say to me: “But why doesn’t the day come when the chairman of the SDP does not always speak in such a loud voice, always roaring against any measures taken by the government, against the government, against the PS?” or even an insult to the prime minister?,” he said.
Admitting that he has “personal sympathies” for Luis Montenegro, Cesar said that the answer is “simple, but, unfortunately, not simple from a civil point of view.”
“This constant denial and these constantly repeated cries are not only because the PSD leader needs to demonstrate, in order to survive in his party, that he speaks louder than Rui Rio or other right-wing leaders. The PSD is convinced that it is not feeding itself, that it is not gaining weight from the good things that are happening in our country, and that what suits it best is to sell the idea of Portugal as if it were a black heap. problems,” he accused.
Carlos Cesar called on the PS to continue to “follow the programs that the Portuguese have consistently supported” before launching a new “barb” at the Social Democratic presidents.
“We know what we want, we know what we are doing, and above all, we are not like the largest opposition party, which from leader to leader rushes to say one thing one day and another the next day, or says one thing and vice versa, in same day, or, as in the case of tax cuts, say on one day the opposite of what you said last year, or say on one day what you are sure the government intends to say the next day,” he said .
Carlos César believed that the PSD “does not want to talk about the good things that are happening, and that fortunately there are a lot of them”, listing economic growth, the value of exports, deficit reduction, “the trajectory of tax cuts” or even “the assessment of teachers’ careers” .
When asked why some government measures were not implemented earlier, Cesar replied that for this to happen, public finances must allow it, and if they are currently progressing, it is “the work and result of the management of the PS.”
Minutes earlier, MEP Carlos Sorrinho had intervened, asking for attention to be turned to the interior of the country and warning that the party faced a “difficult political year”.
“A political year that opens with an opposition that has taken refuge from proposals to become a kind of observer between the institutional relations between the government and the President of the Republic. They don’t play, they don’t participate in democratic games, they are coaches on the bench, they don’t take risks, they play games, they suggest, they comment, they are observers,” he said.
