IOM reports 686 migrant deaths between Mexico and US

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has recorded 686 deaths and disappearances of migrants along the US-Mexico border in 2022.

The United Nations says it is the “deadliest” land route for migrants worldwide.

The figure, published Tuesday on the IOM’s official portal, represents almost half of the 1,457 migrant deaths and disappearances recorded in the Americas in 2022, the “deadliest year” since 2014, when the Missing Migrants Project (MMP, in its acronym) began in 2014 ). , in English).

The new information comes in the Missing Migrants Project’s annual report, which highlights the rising number of deaths as well as the “increasingly serious” risks faced by migrants across the region.

These figures represent an underestimate as it is likely that many more deaths were not recorded due to a lack of data from official sources, the International Organization for Migration said.

“These alarming numbers clearly remind us of the need for decisive action by countries,” said Michelle Klein Solomon, IOM regional director for Central America, North America and the Caribbean.

“Improving data collection is critical. Ultimately, countries need to act on data to ensure access to safe and regular migration routes,” he added.

Nearly half of the deaths (307) along the U.S.-Mexico border were “attributable to dangerous crossings” in the Sonoran and Chihuahuan deserts, according to the IOM.

On the other hand, the IOM adds that at least 212 people died in Africa’s Sahara Desert in 2022, but the remote nature of these areas means the data is likely incomplete.
