Costa says the government is assessing the value of the brake that will be applied to rents

Prime Minister António Costa said this Wednesday that the government is assessing the value of the brake that will be applied to rents and that he will soon hold talks with owner-tenant associations.

“Right now the government is making an assessment,” Antonio Costa told reporters in Porto.

The Prime Minister also said he would meet with landlord and tenant associations to “try to find a value that is as close as possible” to what families can afford and the value set by law.

“We’re going to listen to the industry associations, we’re going to look at what the expected inflation is for the year,” he said, declining to give numbers and arguing it should be a “balanced decision” that doesn’t reduce incentives for owners. , and also not create situations of social upheaval.

According to August inflation data recently published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), rents could rise by 6.94% in 2024 unless the government places a cap on renovations, as it did this year.
