Doctors’ strike in the Lisbon region with participation ranging from 89% to 95%

According to the Independent Union of Doctors (SIM), this Thursday the commitment to the doctors’ strike in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region ranges from 89% in hospital consultations to 95% in health centers.

According to the union, SIM has called for a regional strike on Wednesday and Thursday, with the number of members on Wednesday being the same as on Thursday.

According to data published by the union, the highest rate of adherence (100%) was, for example, in the clinical pathology service of the García da Orta Hospital, in the group of health centers of Loures and Odivelas, in the anesthesia service of the Hospital de Vila Franca. de Hira, as well as in the buildings of this hospital and the hospital of São Bernardo in Setúbal.

Overall, adherence was 90% in operating rooms, 95% in health centers and 89% in hospitals, according to the union.

The strike covers part of the health facilities in the territory of the Regional Health Authority of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (ARSLVT), and the remaining institutions will go on strike at the end of the month.

The strike on Wednesday and today is the first of two regional strikes called by SIM for the Lisbon region and the Tagus Valley. The next one is scheduled for September 27 and 28.

Speaking to Lusa at the start of the first period of the regional strike, the SIM secretary general recalled that at the last negotiating meeting on Tuesday the government “did not exceed the proposed wage increase of 3.1%”, emphasizing that “in the last 10 years there was a loss of wages of 22%”.

“The taxes we pay will force the government to invest in the National Health Service (NHS), which is not happening,” said the man in charge.

On Tuesday, SIM announced a new extension until October 22 of the doctors’ overtime strike, which began on July 24 and will end on September 22.

When asked by Lusa about the possibility of agreeing on SIM card forms of struggle with the National Federation of Doctors (Fnam), which on Tuesday announced a new strike on October 17 and 18, Roque da Cunha replied: “We sat at joint tables and on Monday we made a proposal for a joint summit with Fnam. This proposal has already been responded to, but no date has been set yet.”

According to SIM, the strike during these two days is aimed, in part, at forcing the government to “provide an effective response to the list of demands of the union.”
