A man suspected of involvement in a forest fire that occurred in the Gois area of Coimbra district allegedly started the fire to warn about insufficient forest harvesting, a source in the Judicial Police (PJ) said.
In a conversation with the Lusa agency this Thursday, a source in the management of the PJ Center – the organization that detained the 40-year-old man, divorced, warehouse operator with no criminal record – explained that the suspect admitted to setting the forest on fire. near the site of Konhais, expressing “very concern” about the lack of forest clearance around the village, located about seven kilometers southwest of Geuss.
He added that the man started the fire with direct flame in a forested area bordering the city area.
“This person was very concerned about the lack of cleanliness of the land near the settlement and near his property and place of residence. He alerted several organizations to raise these concerns, and after receiving no answers, he thought the best way to signal this situation was to cause a fire,” PJ’s source stressed.
The same source said that the intervention of the judicial police in the investigation (which included the cooperation of the Working Group for the Reduction of Fires in Rural Areas – Central Zone and the Gois Volunteer Fire Command) occurred after the incident occurred. There were a total of eight fires in the Cone area over the weekend, a situation that merited “attention and care” from PJ.
Although the now detained man took responsibility for only one of the fires, which occurred on Saturday 9th in a forest area “so dense that it could have become infected if not for the quick intervention of firefighters.” , Police Judicial Branch continues to investigate and the man is suspected of being responsible for the remaining seven fires.
“The fires have a common pattern of action, a territorial zone and a temporary space. We will continue the investigation and hope that we can confirm that the authorship is the same,” noted a source in the directorate of the PZh-Center.
The man will appear in court for the first judicial questioning to determine possible coercive measures.
