Marcelo meets with the Portuguese community in Toronto today

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, meets with representatives of the Portuguese expatriate community in Toronto this Saturday as part of his fourth five-day official visit to Canada.

Before this, the head of state will take part in laying the first stone of the future Centro Magalhães, which will become a home for the elderly and a social center for the Portuguese community, and will also visit the Gallery of Portuguese Pioneers. in Toronto.

The meeting and dinner with Portuguese and Portuguese descendants living in Canada’s second largest city will take place at the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) site in Toronto.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has been in Canada since Wednesday on a visit dedicated to the Portuguese diaspora in that country, where about 450,000 people of Portuguese origin live, according to the 2021 census.

The trip, visiting Montreal, Toronto and Mississauga until Sunday, coincides with the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the first documented Portuguese emigrants in Canada.

The so-called pioneers arrived in 1953 after the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1952.

On Friday in Toronto, the President of the Republic met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at a Toronto hotel, and together they visited an exhibition dedicated to Portuguese emigration.

The head of state on this visit is accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs João Gomes Cravinho, the Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities Paulo Cafofo and the deputies João Azevedo and Castro from the PS, Francisco Pimentel from the PSD Diogo Pacheco. de Amorim for Chega, Rodrigo Saraiva, parliamentary leader of the Liberal Initiative, Bruno Diaz for the PCP and José Soeiro for the Bloc de Esquerda.

From Canada, the President of the Republic will travel to the United States of America to take part in the general debate of the 78th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York until September 22.
