The Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE) opened a criminal investigation into the addition of an unauthorized substance to a food additive and seized more than 3,000 packages of these additives worth more than 28,000 euros.
The ASAE statement explains that last week the municipality of Sintra carried out an action to monitor food additive fraud by checking for unauthorized ingredients.
As a result of the inspection, a criminal case was opened on the facts of “falsification of abnormal food products”, the addition of an unauthorized substance to a food additive, and 3,072 packages of food additives were seized for a total amount of 28,309 euros.
In the note, ASAE reminds that economic operators who import, distribute and sell food supplements, as well as consumers, can check the authorization of new food products/ingredients in the new food catalogue, the European Union Novel Food Catalog, which is available. Here.
