Livre’s only deputy, Rui Tavares, will vote on Tuesday against the government’s motion of censure presented by Chega, as he considers it a “red herring” that does not deserve to be “taken seriously.”
In a conversation with Lusa, Ruy Tavares said that on Monday evening the party meeting (the maximum body between congresses) decided by an overwhelming majority to oppose the vote of no confidence presented by Chega – a decision in which only two abstained.
“The free assembly yesterday decided [segunda-feira] that this expression of censure on the part of Chegi was a red herring that did not deserve to be taken seriously, since it was not serious in itself and did not come from a serious political figure,” said Rui Tavares.
Livre’s sole deputy stressed that recently “a supporter of the censure vote published fake news imitating newspaper graphics,” referring to Chegi leader André Ventura and his use of graphics similar to Público and Renascença in posting fake news on social networks. which has already led the Social Communications Regulator to consider that it “may constitute an act of disinformation”.
“Anything that the average citizen would probably do would get him into trouble in court, and that apparently this party could do and get away with a reprimand without serious consequences, and then come and pass a vote of censure to draw attention to something else and run away between the raindrops,” he criticized.
Rui Tavares added that “they will not count on this with Livre,” classifying the proposal as “a political step that does not inspire any confidence.”
Asked whether the proposal should constitute a warning to António Costa’s government, Tavares replied: “We have a whole year to issue warnings to the government, and every day we issue warnings to the government. (…) We would be sick if we needed it. one toxic far-right party that will issue the warnings to the government that we do every day.”
This Tuesday, the parliament is discussing the vote of no confidence in the government presented by Chega, the third that the executive has faced in this legislative body and which is guaranteed to lead thanks to a vote against the absolute majority of the PS.
