The PCP considered this Thursday the measures announced by the government regarding home loans as “insufficient and unfair”, saying that the banks will be “thanked and applauded” as they “continue to benefit from the sacrifices” of families.
“Taking into account these measures announced by the government, it shows that those who are sure to thank and applaud these decisions are the owners and administrators of the banks who continue to benefit from the sacrifices of the people,” MP Bruno Diaz said in a speech . statements to journalists in the Assembly of the Republic.
The Communist considered that the measures approved by the Council of Ministers to help families mitigate the consequences of rising interest rates on housing loans “are insufficient, unfair and that after ten successive increases in interest rates they are too late.”
“We are faced with an opportunity that, in essence, is to protect and defend the banks, which are already earning 11 million euros a day, in the face of what is presented to the public as a reduction, in theory, of benefits that are paid to the bank, but the payments are delayed, and those that, apparently, have been reduced, will then have to be paid in full, in a cumulative manner, to the bank,” he said.
The PKP MP noted that “this means zero savings for families and zero profit for banks” and stated that “the urgent, fair and necessary measure is not to indirectly subsidize bank profits, but rather to force banks to pay from their own funds.” profits, what is the impact of rising interest rates, contributing to a proportional reduction in payments to the bank.”
Bruno Diaz said that “those who benefit from this dramatic situation must be called upon to contribute to this response and solution” and that the measure “should have already been taken”, calling on the government to have “the political courage to confront the interests economic power.”
The communist leader also believed that the Caixa Geral de Depósitos should “call for intervention in the banking market with a significant reduction in spreads”, another PCP proposal.
The MP also criticized the government’s “outrageous and incomprehensible silence regarding the dramatic situation in which the population finds itself with rent” and accused the executive of “abandoning tenants and those who face the threat of homelessness or who are no longer homeless today, and they demand and need these answers.”
“For the PKP the situation is very clear. It is impossible to respond to the housing problems in Portugal without having the political courage to confront the most powerful interests of economic power, especially in relation to banking and real estate funds,” emphasized, considering that “instead of protecting and guaranteeing the profits of the banks and their protection for the future “We need to protect people, confront banks and encourage them to contribute to the necessary response.”
This Thursday, the Council of Ministers approved housing lending measures to help families mitigate the impact of rising interest rates, including a measure that ensures that the interest rate does not exceed 70% of the index (Euribor) and another that extends interest rate support. subsidies for housing loans from 720 to 800 euros.
The government is also maintaining the suspension of fees for early repayment of housing loans until the end of 2024.
