The Supreme Administrative Court has suspended all actions related to the transfer of the remains of Es de Queiroz to the National Pantheon, as part of a precautionary measure put forward by the writer’s family, this was announced this Thursday.
“The order suspends all actions related to the transfer and the matter must be returned to the Assembly of the Republic,” António Fonseca, former president of the parish council of Santa Cruz do Douro, in the municipality of Bayan (District of Porto), where the writer is buried.
According to the former mayor, the decision of the Supreme Administrative Court, where some of the writer’s descendants filed a preventive measure this week, “is a first step, but in the future it will be a big victory for Bayao, because Esa’s place can only be in the shadow of Tormes.”
The resolution to award Ese de Queiroz the National Pantheon Award, an initiative of the foundation that remembers the author, put forward by the PS parliamentary group, was unanimously approved at the plenary session on January 15, 2021. The handover ceremony was scheduled for Wednesday next week.
António Fonseca, in addition to being president of the junta in the previous term, is currently part of a civil movement that was formed to oppose the transfer of power.
“We have always been on the same page, allies of the family,” he stressed, confirming that it was a “fantastic moment.”
“I have always believed in justice, first of all, I believe in the truth,” he noted, criticizing the supporters of the resolution adopted in the Assembly of the Republic for taking a “strange, biased path, without consulting anyone.” , without the knowledge of the family.”
António Fonseca remembered Maria da Graça, the great-granddaughter of Esa de Queiroz, who was president of the Esa de Queiroz Foundation, for fighting in 1989 to transport the writer’s remains from Lisbon to Bayan, where they are still located.
“Mrs. Maria da Graça must be very happy because she worked a lot with the former mayor Arthur Carvalho Borges, who together with her did everything to bring Esa to Santa Cruz,” he commented.
On the other hand, the activist confirmed that the call for Sunday’s demonstration remains, as does access to the foundation’s headquarters.
“The expression of gratitude to Esa and the protest against the people who introduced the proposed resolution in the Assembly of the Republic continues. Now that’s another reason to attend this demonstration. Let’s show the world that Bayan and Santa Cruz do Douro in private, he is firm in his convictions,” he concluded.
