On Tuesday, the President of the Assembly of the Republic condemned the paint attack on Environment Minister Duarte Cordeiro by climate change activists, saying they did a disservice to the cause of environmental protection.
“Attacking people, no matter who they are, and denying them the opportunity to speak out and defend their views is always a reprehensible act. Citing environmental problems in an attempt to justify them is a disservice to this cause, which needs our actions – democratic, consistent and effective,” wrote Augusto Santos Silva on the social network X.
“Today in Lisbon, during a CNN conference on the energy transition involving Galp and EDP, the Minister of Environment and Climate Action was attacked with green paint by three young climate activists.
A few minutes into the conference, when the environment minister took the floor, three young women took to the stage and threw green paint at Duarte Cordeiro’s clothes while shouting slogans protesting against the government.
“The government has proven it doesn’t care about climate change by holding conferences with EDP and GALP”, “This will be the last gas winter”, “We don’t let them sell out our future” and “Galp and EDP don’t want to know about a just transition”, – these are some of the phrases that the young women shouted.
However, the activists were taken out of the room, and the conference was interrupted so that the minister could change clothes and clean the room.
