Fernando Santos is leaving the technical command of the national team after 8 years, as officially announced this Thursday by the Portuguese Football Federation on its official website.
The contract of the 68-year-old coach was calculated until 2024, but the termination was reached amicably. Fernando Santos led Portugal to two titles, the 2016 European Championship and the 2019 Nations League.
The federation said in a statement that “after one of the best performances of the national team in the final stages of the World Cup, the FPF and Fernando Santos understand that now is the right time to start a new cycle.”
“It was an honor for me to have such a coach and such a person as Fernando Santos at the head of the national team,” the note says.
The federation ends the statement by thanking Fernando Santos and the entire technical team for the eight years at the helm of the national team, who will launch the “next national coach selection process”.
