This Sunday, the President of the Republic stressed that one in 30 people in the world is a migrant and that Portugal “is a country of emigration and immigration” in a message marking International Migration Day.
“Migrations are part of our past, we live by them in the present moment and will continue to mark our future,” says Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa in a message published on the official website of the President of the Republic on the Internet.
The head of state emphasizes that in 2022 the International Organization for Migration (IOM) “highlights the significant increase in the number of internally displaced persons, as a result of natural disasters, conflicts and violence, emphasizing that this reality occurs in parallel with the general decline in global mobility as a result of restrictions related to with the covid-19 pandemic.
“Every 30th person in the world is a migrant. Those who left their place of residence, within their own country or abroad. Those or those who are temporarily or permanently away. Those or those who migrated through for a variety of reasons,” he says.
In other words, stressed the President of the Republic, “in times of conflict, climate change and food insecurity, to which is added the difficult recovery of the world economy”, migration has increased.
“This is a reality that we cannot and do not want to forget. Portugal is a country of emigration and immigration,” he stressed.
The message recalls that IOM has been in Portugal since 1976 and that Portugal supports the re-candidacy of António Vitorino for the position of the organization’s CEO, “a mission that reflects the priority of a humanistic approach to the reality of millions of people around the world.”
According to the World Migration Report 2022, there are 281 million international migrants, equivalent to 3.6% of the world’s population.
The previous report, released in 2019, counted 272 million international migrants, i.e. 3.5% of the world’s population.

In the 1970s, the total number of international migrants was about 80 million, equivalent to 2.3% of the world’s population.
