PAN/Madeira spokesman Joaquim Sousa said this Wednesday that the agreement on parliamentary influence signed with the PSD/CDU-PP coalition is illegal, arguing that it must first be approved by the party’s national political commission.
Joaquim Sousa went to the Palacio de São Lourenço in Funchal this Wednesday, while the representative of the Republic of Madeira, Ireneu Barreto, received the PAN as part of the consultations of the parties that won mandates in Sunday’s regional legislative assemblies.
A PAN representative even entered the courtyard of the building, but on the recommendation of Ireneu Barreto’s office, statements to journalists were made outside the São Lourenço Palace.
Joaquim Sousa said that as head of the regional political commission of the MHP, he would have to be received by a representative of the Republic, accusing the elected deputy Monica Freitas and the rest of the party members who participated in the meeting of usurping power. functions.
“The agreement is illegal for a very simple reason: Dr. Monica Freitas, if she signed the agreement on PAN letterhead, has no legitimacy to do so, since she is only an elected deputy, has not yet taken office, does not represent the PAN and has a regional structure , which is represented in court by its regional representative,” he said.
The leader also stressed that the document is “illegal” because it must first be approved by the national political committee of PAN, adding that this body will meet this Wednesday “in an emergency situation precisely to ratify the agreement according to which the national commissioners and regional political committees did not know”.
Regarding the statements of Monica Freitas on Tuesday, who said that she would become the representative of PAN/Madeira and that Joaquim Sousa would be suspended, without explaining the details, Joaquim Sousa assured that “he was not informed of anything.”
“I don’t know anything about any process. I am the elected representative of PAN/Madeira, and in this sense, the meeting taking place inside is the meeting of a usurper,” he emphasized.
The PAN spokesman also stressed that he would not have signed this parliamentary protection agreement, arguing that voters feel they have been “duped” and that there has been a “betrayal”.
On November 12, 2022, Sousa took office as head of the PAN regional political commission after elections on a single list.
In July this year, he was nominated to head the party’s list in the regional elections in Madeira.
But on the eve of the presentation of her candidacy to the Madeira County Judicial Court, PAN announced her replacement with Monica Freitas, justifying the decision in a statement as “incompatibility.”
Joaquim Sousa filed a lawsuit to annul the candidacy of the People-Animals-Nature party in the elections, but the claim was rejected as unfounded.
During a press conference on Tuesday announcing the agreement on the parliamentary legal profession, the elected MP said that Joaquim Sousa will no longer represent the regional structure, but will replace him, since he is number two in the regional structure of the party. and assured that the issue was “already being considered,” without explaining.
The representative of the regional political commission of the party, Joaquim Sousa, has called a meeting for this Wednesday to discuss the organizational situation in the PAN, as well as to analyze the legislative elections in Madeira and the signed agreement.
The Somos-Madeira coalition won Sunday’s regional legislative elections with 43.13% of the vote, but fell short of an absolute one-member majority, which requires 24 of the archipelago’s 47 parliamentary seats, according to official preliminary results. . .
The PS elected 11 deputies, the AKP five and Cega four, while the CDU (PCP/PEV), BE, PAN and IL each elected one deputy.
On Sunday, after the results became known, the leader of the PSD/Madeira and president of the regional government since 2015, Miguel Albuquerque, assured that he is able to present a government with a parliamentary majority, but stressed that Chega – present for the first time in a half-cycle in the next legislature – was excluded from the agreement.
PAN and IL then expressed their willingness to reach a final understanding with the PSD/CDS-PP coalition.
