Marcelo says young people were the ‘driving force behind climate anxiety’

This Wednesday, the President of the Republic noted that, regarding the throwing of paintballs at the Minister of the Environment, the protest of young people shows that they are concerned about climate change and that this is not a new reality for Portugal.

“This is no longer a new reality. It is a universal reality that came to Portugal two or three years ago,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Souza on the sidelines of the conference “Tourism – a factor of national cohesion.”

“This is positive because in recent years young people have been a lot of the driving force behind climate anxiety,” Marcelo insisted.

The Environment Minister was attacked with green paint by three young climate change activists during a CNN conference on the energy transition involving Galp and EDP.

In a conversation with journalists, the President of the Republic considered that “the forms of struggle are more or less effective,” but it is not for him to judge their effectiveness.

“Effectiveness comes from mobilizing the Portuguese to realize these ambitions, which are very important to everyone,” he said.

Marcelo Rebelo de Souza said that in the fight against climate change, “we can say that more is needed and faster” and that “time is being wasted.”

But the president also stressed that Portugal is “at the forefront of Europe and Europe is at the forefront of the world” on the issue.
