Nine areas and the Madeira archipelago are under yellow warning due to heat

Nine areas of mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago will be under a yellow warning until Sunday due to hot weather forecast, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The areas of Porto, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga will be under a yellow warning due to continued high maximum temperatures until 23:00 Sunday.

The north and south coasts of Madeira Island and Porto Santo have been under a yellow warning since Thursday, which will last until 11pm on Sunday.

The IPMA issues a yellow warning, the least severe on a scale of three, whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.

Maximum temperatures across the continent will rise above 30 degrees Celsius from this Friday to reach 37 degrees, around 5 to 8 degrees above the September average, according to IPMA.

Starting this Friday, the continent’s weather will be affected by “an intense anticyclonic ridge located over Western Europe, associated with the transfer of a mass of hot and dry air originating in North Africa.”

According to IPMA, maximum temperatures are expected to reach between 35 and 37 degrees, especially in the southern region and Tagus Valley.

Minimum temperatures will also rise and some places, especially along the coast of the Algarve region, could experience nights with temperatures equal to or exceeding 20 degrees.

This general increase in temperature, accompanied by a decrease in relative humidity, will increase the risk of rural fires, especially in the interior regions of the Algarve.

The IPMA placed the municipalities of Algesur, Lagos, Monchique, Portimão, Silves, Loule, São Bras de Alportel and Tavira in Faro district at maximum risk of rural fires on Saturday.

Another 20 municipalities in the districts of Faro, Beja, Santarem, Leiria, Portalegre and Castelo Branco will be at very high risk of fire.

This hot weather is expected to continue until at least Tuesday.
