Next winter, 27 of the 41 maternity hospitals on the Portuguese mainland will be fully operational.

The Executive Directorate of the National Health Service (DE-SNS) has announced that from Monday to 31 January 2024, mainland Portugal will have 27 fully operational maternity hospitals out of 41.

The program “Safe Birth in SNS Winter 23/24”, published this Monday by DE-SNS, also includes 10 maternity wards with planned closure days, three maternity wards owned by the private sector and one maternity ward in Santa Claus. Mary’s Hospital, which moved due to work.

According to information published by DE-SNS, in the Northern region there will be 13 maternity hospitals operating at full capacity, in the Central region there will be six operating at full capacity and one with planned closure days, and in the regions of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo there will be four maternity hospitals operating homes in full operation, eight with planned closure days, one maternity hospital relocated due to construction work and three maternity hospitals in the private sector under an agreement with SNS, while counseling for pregnant women will be carried out by the INEM Emergency Patient Care Centre.

In the Alentejo, the three existing maternity hospitals in the region will operate at full capacity, and in the Algarve region, the emergency department will operate in at least one of the centers – Faro or Portimão.

DE-SNS emphasizes the importance of pregnant women calling SNS 24 (808 24 24 24) before contacting health facilities, emphasizing that in emergency situations they should call 112.
