PSD claims Costa is lost in controversy and appears to be “going against the grain”

The SDP general secretary on Tuesday accused the prime minister of being “entangled in contradictions and lost in what should be the art of good governance”, resembling “a car going the wrong way on the highway”.

In a conversation with Lusa, Hugo Soares noted that in an interview with TVI and CNN on Monday evening, António Costa gave the feeling that “I live in a country different from the one where the Portuguese live” and “forgets that he was the first… minister eight years ago” .

“He was serious and honest, he said that he was not the prime minister of doctors, teachers and, ironically, journalists. But doctors, journalists, teachers, court officials, security forces are Portuguese and specific people who want to see their problems solved,” the Social Democratic leader criticized.

Asked about the prime minister’s criticism of the PSD proposal to fully compensate teachers’ working hours (Costa said it was “unsustainable for the country”), the PSD general secretary considered the two alternatives to be “absolutely clear.”

“The first is the government’s lack of respect for teachers, its lack of appreciation for public schools, and it coexists well with the more than 90,000 students who do not have a subject teacher at the start of the school year,” he said.

On the other hand, he countered, it is an alternative to the SDP, “which has made the choice to make increasing the value of public schools” a priority and to “restore authority and respect to teachers” but “while maintaining respect for the right accounts.” stating that the party refuses to receive lessons from the PS in this area.

Hugo Soares stated that the PSD proposal “is credible and feasible” and reiterated that if the cost of this reparation is what has been publicly disclosed – between 250 and 300 million euros – the party proposes to make this reparation on time. services in full, after five years, at a rate of 20% per year.

In the part of the interview regarding housing, Hugo Soares expressed regret that the Prime Minister expressed disagreement with the President of the Republic, the opposition parties and all the operators of the sector, simply “standing next” to those who have spoken out in the past. weeks.

“This is not center-left or center-right behavior, it is a big hypocrisy. All he had to do was take the flag and take to the streets to protest against the government,” he joked, wondering if Costa did not realize that this demonstration was against the executive branch “which he himself runs.”

“The Prime Minister is entangled in many contradictions and completely lost in what should be the art of good governance,” he lamented, referring to the title of the latest book by former President of the Republic, Prime Minister and PSD leader Aníbal Cavaco Silva.
