At least 21 people died Tuesday after a bus fell onto a viaduct in the northern Italian city of Mestre, near Venice, the city’s mayor Luigi Brugnaro said.
Among the dead were two children, five Ukrainians, a German and a car driver.
According to Rai News, 18 people were injured.
According to the Italian press, quoted ReutersThe bus went off the road and crashed near the railway tracks in the Mestre area, which is connected to Venice by a bridge. The causes of the accident are still unclear.
On Facebook, the mayor of Venice said he had “immediately” declared a state of mourning in the city “in memory of the people on the bus.”
“An apocalyptic scene without words,” Brugnaro said.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her “deepest condolences” over the incident and said she was in close contact with Luigi Brugnaro and Minister Matteo Piantedosi to monitor updates on “this tragedy.”
