Prime Minister António Costa said on Tuesday that Portugal would support the European Commission’s proposal to tax energy companies’ windfall profits by at least 33% in response to an appeal by the UN Secretary General on the matter.
“Now there is a proposal from the European Commission, which will be presented to the Council. [Europeu]. Portugal will support the proposal of the European Commission,” António Costa told reporters at the Permanent Mission of Portugal to the UN in New York.
In his opening speech at the general debate of the 77th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Tuesday, António Guterres called on “all developed countries to tax the windfall profits of fossil fuel companies.”
