Red Bull’s Max Verstappen clinched his third Formula One world title while continuing to race after his teammate and sole title rival Sergio Perez crashed during the sprint at the Qatar Grand Prix this Saturday.
Mexican Perez needed a top-three finish to officially keep the title open for another day, with the main Grand Prix on Sunday, but he started eighth and dropped to 11th before colliding with Alpine driver Esteban on lap 11 Window.
The Red Bull got stuck in the gravel and Perez climbed out of the car.
This means that Verstappen, who was running third at the time, became champion for the third year in a row, regardless of where he finished.
The 26-year-old Dutch driver will start from pole position in Sunday’s race, chasing his 14th victory in 17 Grands Prix.
