“We were, are and will be on the side of Ukraine,” this is how the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, declared yesterday his unconditional support for Kyiv in the conflict with Russia, together with the head of the Romanian state. .
During Klaus Iohannis’ visit to Portugal, the presidents of the two countries emphasized that they see the world “in the same way” in the face of the war that is taking place right next to the border with Romania.
As one of Ukraine’s neighbors, the Romanian leader assured that he would support “whatever is necessary, without conditions,” emphasizing his commitment to facilitating the transportation of grain. “We have never made this transit difficult, unlike other neighboring countries,” Iohannis said.
Current world events have shaped Marcelo’s agenda in recent days. On Friday, at a meeting of the Arraiolos group, support for Ukraine from 14 EU countries was emphasized, but changes in Ukraine’s accession treaties divided the heads of state.
