Zero accuses the government of jeopardizing environmental goals by promoting road transport

The environmental association Zero accused the government this Sunday of jeopardizing emissions reduction targets with recent measures to encourage road transport, advocating an urgent policy change amid a “full climate emergency”.

In his statement, Zero criticizes measures recently announced by the government and other agents responsible for the road transport sector, introducing rebates on highways, widening congested roads and reducing the tax on petroleum products (ISP) and the applicable carbon tax on road fuels, to the detriment of investment in public transport.

“These measures, in addition to threatening to meet the emission reduction targets in the transport sector set out in the National Energy and Climate Plan 2030 (PNEC 2030) and the new European Renewable Energy Directive (REDIII), support the economy and Portuguese society in hostage to fossil fuels and exposed to future inflation risks that will remain beyond their control,” he argues.
