The PSD considers Santos Silva responsible for the withdrawal from the AR program on November 25

This Monday, the PSD held the President of the Assembly of the Republic responsible for the fact that the 50th anniversary of November 25, 1975 was still left outside the official program of parliamentary celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, expressing “shock.”

“This decision is an exceptional decision by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, who understood that the lack of consensus must exclude November 25th. [de 1975] celebrations,” PSD parliamentary leader Joaquim Miranda Sarmento said at a press conference in parliament.

The Social Democrat was asked about the announcement made last week by Lisbon City Council President Carlos Moedas that the city would celebrate “with great initiative” November 25, 1975, in addition to April 25, 1974.

The 50th anniversary of this military operation is still outside the scope of the official program of parliamentary celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution and the 1976 Constitution, presented last week, with Augusto Santos Silva noting then that, in addition to the agreed dates, According to the organizing committee, they may have There may be initiatives to celebrate other dates on the part of parliamentary groups, the leadership conference or the President of Parliament himself.

“We are shocked that the President of the Assembly of the Republic does not want to celebrate November 25, perhaps for fear of irritating former partners in the “contrivance”, but this decision was made and remains exclusively in the sphere of the President of the Assembly of the Republic,” stressed Miranda Sarmento.

The parliamentary leader of the PSD stressed that Parliament would celebrate the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974 “and the entire revolutionary period” from that date until “the elections of the first constitutional government and the first legislative body of the Assembly, which will take place on April 25, 1976.”

For the party, November 25, 1975 “is a very important date in this historical period.”

Miranda Sarmento recalled that in April the parliament adopted the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky via videoconference, and that “this decision was also not a consensus decision.”

“The PKP was not present at the plenary meeting, and we still received President Zelensky. I see no reason not to celebrate November 25, and I see no reason, even though this is not a consensus, because this is not practice,” – he stated.

Miranda Sarmento also recalled “the words of Professor Augusto Santos Silva.”

“I remember the words of Professor Augusto Santos Silva, I think in 2007 or 2008, when before a demonstration of teachers he said that democracy in Portugal arose thanks to Mário Soares and Salgado Zeña, not Álvaro Cunhal or Mário Nogueira. because it was Mario Soares and Salgado Zegna who fought for democracy until April 25 against the Estado Novo, and after April 25 against the establishment of a communist dictatorship,” he stressed.

Miranda Sarmento insisted that “Mario Soares himself has several statements and letters in which he says that November 25 was a fundamental moment to prevent the establishment of a communist dictatorship in Portugal.”

Last week, at a press conference, the President of the Assembly of the Republic said that the organizing committee of the commemorative events, which includes members of parties with parliamentary representation, decided that the program of initiatives should be coordinated.

“In the organizing committee, we decided that the dates and events that were unanimously read among us would be adopted as the program. Therefore, we decided to focus on the sequence of the revolution of April 25, 1974, the first free elections, the approval of the Constitution and the first elections to the Assembly of the Republic, the President of the Republic, regional and municipal autonomies,” explained Augusto Santos Silva.

Regarding the issue of November 25, 1975, the former Minister of State and Foreign Affairs then stressed that this “does not mean that there will not be other initiatives to celebrate other dates.”

“The initiatives of parliamentary groups, the leadership conference or myself are in this course,” he added.
