Education Minister João Costa promised this Monday a state budget (OE) for growth in the sector for 2024, sending details for a presentation on Tuesday.
“We still have OE, which, as since 2015, continues to grow in the education sector,” he said on the sidelines of an official visit to Cape Verde.
“Until last year, we already had a consolidated growth of 36% in investment and education spending and this growth continues now, but the finance minister will have to give good news about our OE,” he added.
When asked by Lusa about the possibility of including additional support for accommodation and travel for teachers in the Lisbon and Algarve regions, João Costa refused to provide details.
The 2023/2024 school year began about a month ago, and the teacher shortage is mainly affecting schools in these two regions, which have complained of high costs.
As a consequence, the year began with many students not attending classes in various subjects.
Education Minister João Costa confirmed that the problem has been “identified” and that the situation is “not new”, guaranteeing that the government is developing a range of measures to try to solve the problem.
