Santos Silva emphasizes that the celebration program is the result of cross-party consensus

The President of the Assembly of the Republic emphasizes that the parliamentary program for the celebration of the 50th anniversary on April 25 contains initiatives that have received consensus among different parties, although there may be other initiatives.

This position of Augusto Santos Silva arose after criticism from the PSD, the Liberal Initiative and Chega, since the military operation of November 25, 1975 was not included in the program of commemorations of April 25 presented last week by the President of the Assembly of the Republic.

In his statement, the President of the Assembly of the Republic emphasizes that the committee organizing the celebrations, which includes representatives of all parliamentary parties, approved the program at its meeting on July 6 by “consensus.”

“It was this program that was presented at the press conference on October 3, with the President of the Assembly of the Republic stating on this occasion that this does not mean that there will not be other initiatives to celebrate other dates – initiatives of parliamentary groups, the conference of leaders or myself in time for this course.”

“Consensus means that, regardless of the ideas and proposals that each person intends to present and the reactions they evoke in others, a common position is reached which, although not meriting the unanimous vote of all, does not give rise to rejection by others.” This is what has always happened regarding the celebration of April 25 in the Assembly of the Republic, both at the leadership conference and in the organizing committee,” he asserts.

In the first part of the statement, the President of the Assembly of the Republic states that the main directions of the program were “agreed upon at the leadership conference on September 28, 2022.”

And the central dates of the celebration will be the following: “April 25, 1974, as the moment of the overthrow of the Estado Novo dictatorship and the beginning of the democratic transition; 25 April 1975, first free elections and universal suffrage, in Portugal; and April 2, 1976 – approval of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic; April 25, 1976 – first elections to the Assembly of the Republic.”

Other central dates of the program are “June 27, 1976, the first elections of the President of the Republic by direct and universal suffrage and the first elections to the Legislative Assemblies of the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira; December 12, 1976, first elections. for local authorities, thereby closing the electoral cycle for all elected political bodies.”

Augusto Santos Silva then adds that the organizing committee, which he heads, “is composed of representatives of all political parties with seats in parliament and has worked in accordance with these guidelines.”

After criticism from other political forces such as Chega and the Liberal Initiative, the PSD this Monday held the President of the Assembly of the Republic responsible for the fact that the 50th anniversary of November 25, 1975 is still outside the official program of parliamentary celebrations. .in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, expressing “shock.”

“This decision is an exceptional decision by the President of the Assembly of the Republic, who understood that the lack of consensus must exclude November 25th. [de 1975] celebrations,” PSD parliamentary leader Joaquim Miranda Sarmento said at a press conference in parliament.
