The PSD president suggested on Tuesday that the European elections in June 2024 would be a “great opportunity” for the Portuguese to show the government a “yellow card” for “frustration, impoverishment, talking about results and disappointment”.
“I believe this will be a great opportunity for the Portuguese to show a yellow card to the government, a yellow card for disappointment, disappointment, disappointment, lack of results, impoverishment, for leading us to the bottom of Europe. Unfortunately, this is where we are “, said Luis Montenegro in the opening speech of the PSD National Council in Maia, Porto district.
According to the Social Democrat, for this “yellow card” to be effective, it is necessary that popular support for the government decrease and popular support for the main opposition party increase.
“The country will understand and the government will understand the message of the voters only if the voters simultaneously say that this government is doing wrong and that there is a political force that can do better,” he added.
Even though the European elections will not be easy, Montenegro has guaranteed that the PSD will fight and win. “It’s also not easy to make up for the gap we took, which is 12 percentage points.
In the last elections we received 21% against 33% for the PS, and these are elections that we have not won since 2009,” he emphasized. In addition, the leader of the SDP recalled that the day of the European elections – June 9 – is a difficult day , which is complicated by the fact that these elections are already generally poorly attended.
“And this will be the first election in which the SDP will fight for the electorate to the right of the PS with a different party fragmentation than what we are used to,” he emphasized.
European elections are scheduled for June 9, 2024, Luis Montenegro’s term ends in July, and domestic elections are likely to take place after next summer.
Luis Montenegro has confirmed that regardless of the results of the next elections, he will re-apply for the party leadership.
“After the European elections, I will again run for the presidency of the PSD in order to bring the PSD to the leadership of the Portuguese government,” he emphasized.
And he concluded: “I was not a candidate to manage the European election process. I was president of the PSD to become prime minister of Portugal.”
