Economy Minister António Costa Silva said this Wednesday that the state budget for 2024, presented on Tuesday, is a “reasonable budget”.
“The government budget is a smart budget that ensures fiscal consolidation and at the same time restores the incomes of families and individuals,” António Costa Silva told reporters at the end of the Portugal Smart Cities Summit in Lisbon.
When asked about the impact of increasing the tax on petroleum products (ISP) and the abolition of the VAT exemption program for the food basket, the minister noted that in 2022 the government “allocated $6 billion to help families and companies.”
The government official insisted that “the revenues will be replaced” and that the government will pay attention and “see how they develop.”
António Costa Silva said he was “monitoring the reactions and dialogues” and would “comment on this in due course.”
The government unveiled OE2024 on Tuesday, which revises gross domestic product (GDP) growth upward from 1.8% to 2.2% in 2023 and downward from 2.0% to 1.5% next year.
Proposal OE2024 will be debated and voted upon as a whole on October 30 and 31, with a final global vote scheduled for November 29.
