State budget supports desalination in Algarve

Efficient use of water and optimization of the use of existing storage facilities is one of the goals of the Ministry of the Environment.

In 2024, the Algarve desalination plant in Albufeira will not come into operation until 2026, according to the state budget proposal. The desalination plant will produce 16 million cubic meters of fresh water, representing more than 20% of the Algarve’s public water supply. needs are estimated at 72 million cubic meters.

More connections are also being made between the Alqueva project and existing water supply systems in the Guadiana and Sado basins. To preserve the watercourses, the government will once again regulate the kingfisher trade.

Regarding water resources, research will be carried out at the Fagilde (Viseu), Alvito (Ocreza River) and Fupana (Algarve) dams. In Viseu district, work on the Ribeira do Pol dam in the municipality of Tondela will continue in 2024.
