Costa meets with SNS CEO on Friday

This Wednesday, the Prime Minister told Socialist MPs that he will meet on Friday with the chief executive of the National Health Service (SNS), Fernando Araújo, and said that the 2024 budget includes sufficient allocations for the sector.

Socialist sources told Lusa that the meeting was reported by António Costa in a part of the meeting closed to the media that he held in parliament with the PS parliamentary group on the 2024 state budget proposal.

During the meeting, several deputies warned António Costa and Finance Minister Fernando Medina, who was also present at the meeting, of the consequences for SNS if many doctors continued to refuse to exceed the legal overtime limit.

At this point, the Prime Minister noted that his governments had already increased health funding by around 70%, and then spoke about the increases that would also be seen in the 2024 Budget, making it clear that the problem of social media was not serious. financial in nature.

António Costa, according to PS deputies present at the meeting, argued that the SNS will have to adapt to new times with a new generation of health workers.

On Tuesday, at a press conference on the state budget for 2024, the Minister of Finance announced that health care will receive reinforcements in the amount of 1.209 million euros.

Fernando Medina specified that the health sector will thus receive a 10% increase in the funds transferred to it through the budget, which means “an increase of 72% compared to 2015” and “also an increase compared to post-pandemic values in 2021 ” “.

In particular, according to the state budget proposal, the Executive Directorate of the National Health Service (SNS), headed by Fernando Araujo, will have a budget of 2.5 million euros in 2024.

The budget proposal states that in 2024, the activities of the Executive Directorate will be consolidated “in conjunction with the reorganization of SNS for the future, the expansion of local health units (ULS) across the country and the optimization of care delivery models based on multidisciplinary teams. , highlighting family health units, which should be widespread, community care units and, in a hospital context, integrated responsibility centers.”

As part of the restructuring of the SNA, 32 entities were created and 42 were abolished, including five regional health departments, whose responsibilities were transferred to the SNA.

In June 2023, 150,422 specialists worked in the SNS, which is 25% more than in December 2015 and 10.8% more than in December 2019.
