PSD leader calls decentralization process a “failure”

The PSD chairman considered this Friday that the decentralization process promoted by the government has been a “failure,” criticizing the “limited financial resources” transferred to local authorities.

“These transfers only serve to ‘fill holes’, and that is not what it should be. This is a process that has been a “failure” because it amounts to nothing more than the transfer of a set of expenditures from the central administration to local authorities, but without any room for maneuver,” said the leader of the Social Democrats on the sidelines of a visit to an agricultural farm in Vila do -Conde, in the district of Porto.

This topic of decentralization was discussed on Thursday by Luis Montenegro at a meeting with PSD mayors of the Porto district as part of the party’s “Sentir Portugal” initiative, and is also due to be addressed this afternoon at a meeting with President Rui Moreira. Chambers of Porto.

“Two years have passed since we celebrated this movement [independente] led by Rui Moreira, a political agreement on the management of the Porto Chamber, and we will take stock of the first half of the mandate and deal with very important issues of local government and the city,” Montenegro said.

The PSD leader expressed “great concern about the sense of insecurity that exists in Porto”, specifying that “problems have been identified in several areas, especially related to drug use.”

Still within the local government, Luis Montenegro put forward the idea of holding local elections in 2025, setting goals to secure the PSD.

“The party’s goal is to significantly increase its local representation, especially in the Porto district, where we only lead five municipalities. We want to win back important chambers such as Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Gondomar or Valongo, and obviously we are working to win municipalities such as Vila do Conde and Matosinhos,” he said.

Despite this, the president of the Social Democrats admitted that “it will be difficult to win all the chambers of the district”, but was confident “that the SDP will present good candidates.”

“We are going to fight for the 18 wards knowing that the political, local and regional conditions exist to win this election,” he concluded.
