A “spontaneous group” of more than 20 teachers this Saturday supported Professor Rui García, who lives in a van hundreds of kilometers from his home, paid for for the night by Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
Rui García’s case came to light after an SIC report revealed in September that the physical education teacher had been transferred to teach in Elvas, more than 400 kilometers from home, and that he was living in a van called “T0”.
A teacher and his “T0” are this Saturday in front of the Palacio de Belem in Lisbon, where there are also more than 20 teachers who came to show solidarity and denounce the difficulties that many teachers face, especially when finding accommodation.
Luse Ruy García explained that when he competed in national competitions, he did so with a conscience and knowing that he could go teach anywhere in the country, but at the same time believed that he met all the conditions to get a home.
This has not yet happened, despite the fact that they have repeatedly appealed to both the Elvas City Council and the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU), so the protest took place at the door of the head of state.
Rui García was received by two advisers to the President of the Republic, to whom he presented his case and from whom he heard that they would convey the information to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
At the end of the meeting, the professor informed everyone present that Marcelo Rebelo de Souza personally decided to help.
“Mr. President, having received money from his own pocket, took the initiative to rent me a room here in the Setubalense boarding house, where I can shower and sleep. Today I can stay overnight and I am very grateful to Mr. President,” Ruy García said, adding that he would later thank him in writing.
In addition to the applause, the teacher, wearing a Union of All Education Professionals (Stop) T-shirt, took the opportunity to praise the courage and strength of Rui García and remember that “there was a time when it was necessary.” they placed teachers in the most remote villages, built a school and a house for the teacher.”
“We are going backwards because the buildings of the Ministry of Education in Lisbon, as far as I know, are rented at 1,400 euros per apartment,” said the same teacher.
Rui García said he would use the next week to “settle down” because it had been “a lot of fuss” and “very tiring” and that he would then write a document to send to Marcelo Rebelo de Souza. , in which he will ask all the questions that concern him, mainly about the brake standard, which, in his opinion, should be revised.
The brake rule is a mandatory rule for teachers who receive three consecutive full-time and annual contracts (or equivalent) and have a vacancy within the teaching zone (QZP) and the host school’s recruitment team in the last of the three years.
“The punishment is such that I can, as a last resort, resign without even being bound by an unfair rule,” he defended himself.
He also said it was up to teachers to put the issue on the political agenda, “with this kind of action or better.”
