Ben Khalifa, a young Portuguese-Israeli who remains in serious condition in a Jerusalem hospital, was wounded in action after coming to the aid of his commander in clashes with Hamas on October 7.
“They were ambushed when they were called to clear the town of Kissufim near the Gaza Strip on Saturday,” one of their family members said.
During the clashes, the commander was injured. “Menachem Bem Khalifa ran to help him but was shot,” the same source said.
The young reservist “was wounded in the arm. The bullet went right through and hit an artery, veins and parts of the lung.”
Menachem Hillel Ben Khalifa remains hospitalized in Hadassah Hospital, Israel.
The 22-year-old was born in Israel but also has Portuguese citizenship, a source from the Porto community said.
The connection to Portugal stems from his father, Refael Ben Khalifa, who comes from a traditional Sephardic community in Morocco.
“In the 19th and 20th centuries, members of this family returned to Portugal, keeping records of their names in Jewish cemeteries in Lisbon and the Azores,” the same source said.
