This Friday, parliament unanimously approved an “absolute” condemnation of Hamas’ terrorist attacks in Israel and defended the creation of humanitarian corridors in the Gaza Strip, providing access to water, food and energy.
Of the five points of condolences of the Foreign Affairs Committee in connection with the conflict between Israel and Hamas, three were approved unanimously, and one, the fifth, only Chega abstained.
Only the second point, concerning the right of the State of Israel to defend itself within the framework of international law, motivated the vote against the PCP and the Bloc de Esquerda, with Chega and the PAN abstaining.
This vote of the Foreign Affairs Committee was the result of a merger of two texts originally presented by the Portugal-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group and Livre, and which was finally agreed on Thursday between PS and PSD colleagues.
The first paragraph, approved unanimously, states that the Assembly of the Republic “absolutely, immediately and unequivocally condemns the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel last Saturday, expressing its deepest regret for the victims of these attacks, especially children, and expressing solidarity with the families and friends of these victims and with the Israeli people.”
Unanimity was also seen in calls for “the release of all hostages and kidnapped people and a cessation of hostilities” so that “access to water, food or energy is not cut off” and that humanitarian corridors be established to provide full aid and support to the Palestinian people and innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip.”
